On Matt’s side of the family, his little brother’s wife has a number of Thanksgiving celebrations and Christmases she has to attend…all on the actual holiday. So we decided a few years back that our families would celebrate those holidays on a different day.
Matt used to go hunting on Thanksgiving and I would just stay home and online shop. We didn’t do anything special. My family hadn’t done Thanksgiving in awhile due to many factors. (Although, my dad and I used to like Black Friday shopping together. That was our thing.) When Abby was a baby, I decided we should do something special so the three of us started the very first Pies-giving.
Basically, Pies-giving is Thanksgiving but all food must be in the form of a pie. Or at the very least, served in a pie plate. I typically make a turkey or chicken pot pie, pumpkin pie, and chocolate cream pie. Last year my parents joined us.
This is our 3rd Annual Pies-giving. My parents will be joining us again today. As my dad has diabetes that is controlled by diet and exercise, my mom is bringing some healthier options for him.
While it isn’t traditional, it is fun that we have created our own tradition. Rather than cooking a whole Thanksgiving meal for just a few of us…to then have another one the next day, this is so much easier. Plus… pie. Need I say more? 😉
Happy Thanksgiving (or Pies-giving)!
