Most people hear “essential oils” and think “expensive.” But did you know saving money with essential oils is one of the reasons to use them? Yes, I said saving money. Essential oils can and should be part of a frugal families staple items. They are so versatile and can cut back on other expenses. Check out these ways why you should start incorporating essential oils to save money.
Saving Money with Essential Oils
Less medication
I find that essential oils really help cut back with my purchase of medications. Lemon, peppermint, and lavender oils, when combined and either applied topically or diffused, are excellent for seasonal support. For me, mold still requires a little boost from an OTC product but pollen doesn’t bother me hardly at all when I use this combo. It really helps support my body to do its job with seasonal issues. Headache? Peppermint oil. Sore from exercising or sleeping wrong? PanAway! (As always, every person is different has a slightly different reaction to things. What works great for me may only work okay for you. I’m not a doctor and your results may vary.)
DIY cleaners
Buying different cleaners for different things really adds up, even with coupons. A little knowledge and research and you can make most all of your household cleaners with a few ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, water, and essential oils. In fact, making an all-purpose cleaner only takes 20-30 drops of oil and can last quite some time.
Cost per drop
Sure, Julie, we don’t have to buy as many OTC meds or cleaning products. But a bottle of oil still costs a pretty penny. Yup. You’re right. But here’s the thing, you aren’t using much of the bottle at all. Here’s an example for you. Lemon is a very popular oil for many things, including cleaning. A 15mL bottle of lemon oil, with a wholesale account, is $11.25. There are about 250 drops in a 15mL bottle. So one drop of lemon oil costs just under $0.05. 5 cents!
Say you use 20 drops to make a cleaner. You only spent $1 on the oils used in that cleaner. When I diffuse lemon, peppermint, and lavender during the spring, I use two drops of each. That’s $0.46 per day. If I used the OTC product I used to use, full of chemicals, I would be spending $0.60 per day. Over the course of the two months I need the support, that’s a savings of $8.40.

Yes, there are some oils that are more affordable than others. Though it is highly tempting to buy every oil, if you are on a budget, you only need a few to get many benefits. The oils you get in the Premium Starter Kit are the most versatile. There are a few others beyond that that are also economical but those 11 are the best place to start and keep stocked. Lemon, peppermint, lavender, Thieves, frankincense, and PanAway are my most used from the starter kit. Beyond that, tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia) and orange are also ones I use most often.
Better health and quality of life
When used in addition to vitamins/probiotics and a healthy diet, I find that using essential oils with my family has helped support our overall health which results in fewer doctor visits. They also seem to help improve our moods. No, essential oils aren’t medicine. No, they aren’t the be all to end all. However, they can help support your body and body systems to do what they were supposed to do even better!
When we’re healthier, our quality of life is also better. I don’t know about you but when I’m in a constant slump, I spend more money. I buy junk food more often, I indulge in retail therapy more often, I purchase more movie rentals. That’s a lot of spending! When my health is better and my mood is better, I spend less money. Yes, a bottle of oil is going to cost me $10-40 but it’s going to last me 1-4 months, sometimes longer. That’s a lot cheaper than going on an Amazon spending spree!
