Yesterday afternoon after church we came home, ate lunch, washed dishes, you know, the usually stuff. Little did we know the rest of the day would not be as mundane and normal.
Sundays throw off naps what with the car naps on the way to and from church. So Abby’s nap doesn’t usually happen until 3:30 or so. So when Matt went to go get her after she woke up, I was side tracked with some other things as it was late in the day.
He was in the kitchen working on maple syrup. I was in the living room working on computer stuff when I suddenly thought “Where’s Abby?”
My answer came in the form of lots of thudding and then crying.
Both Matt and I had assumed the gate at the top of the stairs was closed. We both assumed incorrectly.
We both went running to go get her. She was okay. She had some bumps and bruises but no blood, no broken bones. Mostly just scared…as was I. We decided to take her to the emergency room to get check out just in case.
She was cleared there. They told us we checked all the right things and to just always double check the gate from now on. Believe me, we will be. We didn’t have to be told.
By the time we got done at the hospital, it was 7pm. Well past dinner time. So we just headed over to McDonald’s for something quick.
Abby greatly enjoyed her first real visit to McDonald’s. She really enjoyed her chicken nuggets sans breading and apples. She thought she was a “big girl” eating restaurant food for the first time.
Even though she was okay and looks fine today, there was nothing sweeter than that “Momma?” coming from her room at 7:20 this morning.
Moral of the story: Never assume that the other parent latched the gate.

Poor baby! Mine pitched himself off a chair this weekend and I grabbed him with scissors in my hand 🙁 It’s such a blessing that they are so resilient!
