We were given some child-sized plastic chairs. They sat in a shed for years and then sat in our shed for another year. Abby wasn’t big enough for them last year. This year she is so I had Matt pull them out. They looked a little worse for the wear so I scrubbed them down. I even used a magic eraser. They still looked horrible grungy and dirty. I asked Abby what she thought and we decided to paint them. We decided on pink and green. Unfortunately, our store didn’t have the right shade of green in a gloss finish so we did rose pink and a robin’s egg blue instead.
I can’t believe how amazing they look now! Behold, the magical power of spray paint!
The difference is amazing! I used a spray paint that works on plastic. I had to buy two cans because of the two different colors. I spent less than $8 and have plenty of paint left for other projects.
I also have been working on painting my kitchen cabinets. I wanted to replace the hardware as well as I don’t like what was currently there. The hinges I wanted were around $2. That doesn’t seem like much until you calculate out how many cabinets there were. Just hinges, not handles, I was looking at around $60. That was far, far too expensive for this project. Enter spray paint again!
I’m still not a huge fan of the style but going from black to silver made a huge difference! I absolutely love spray paint for a cheap upgrade. There are just so many great things about spray paint. It is very much a frugal secret weaponΒ for me.
Affordable
Even an expensive can of spray paint is under $5. Most are around $2-3 and go pretty far.
Lots of colors
You can get spray paint in so many different colors and shades. Even though I couldn’t find the color I originally wanted, I’m positive I would have found it at a bigger store.
Instant update
Some upgrades/updates take a while to see an improvement. Spray paint is almost instant.
Easy of use
Spray paint is super simple easy to use. It can be a little bit messy but it is so, so easy to use. You don’t need to have any real knowledge to be able to use it.
Spray paint is such a great thrifty option for those of us on a budget who want to upgrade an item. It is definitely one of my frugal secret weapons. π
Do you use spray paint to give things a cheap makeover? What items are part of your frugal secret weapons?

Yes, you are right! Spray paint is an amazing tool for a quick and easy makeover! Your little chairs came out so pretty and I’m sure your daughter will enjoy them:)
She absolutely loves them. π
Love the chairs, but I really love your new cabinets and the handles are really pretty. I’m wanting to pull our lights off the front porch and paint them. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you! I spray painted a ceiling fan years ago. I wish I had a picture of it before I painted it. But it was the old brass style of the ’90s. Now it is silver and the blades are brown (they had gold designs on them). If you get around to doing your front porch lights, take a picture! I’m a sucker for a good before and after. π
What an awesome weekend project – I need to do this with my old plastic chairs that are starting to fade!! Thanks for the inspiration!
Yes, you should totally do this! π
So yeah…you totally had me at spray paint. I love that stuff! I made over a bunch of old frames with the stuff. It’s so easy to make simple things look so chic, just like what you did with the lawn chairs. Great job!
Spray paint lovers, unite! π
Great idea!!!!! Love this!
I love all paint. Unfortunately I live in a place where the weather has not allowed me to paint yet. Can’t wait!
I have used spray paint in my basement with the windows open when I couldn’t be outside. Shhhhhh!!!! π
Perfect color choice for those chairs! Great job!
If I listed all thing in my home – in and out – that have been spray painted, you’d be reading forever! Paint for plastic is a great tool. Visiting from Welcome Home Wednesday party.
