Have you ever gotten burned out on something? A job, a food, a diet, a certain activity, any number of things can burn us out. The same is true of frugal living. Living on a budget can get old in a hurry. You can get so frustrated with not being able to do what you want with your money. Paying down debt is like that for me. I get so annoyed that any extra money goes to paying down debt. Or it goes to something else and then I feel guilty that it didn’t go to the debt. You just get burned out. Burn out can lead to not doing the activity anymore which can then create problems. Which is why is is important to:
Know Your Why
You need to know why you are living on a tight budget. You need to know why you don’t have cable or get to go out to eat or go to the mall for fun. You need the long term goal, big picture why. If you just say, “I’m not going out to eat so we can pay off our debt,” you’re going to burn out and fail. If you say, “We’re not going out to eat so that we can pay off our debt so that one day we can go on a yearly vacation,” you are more likely to stick with it. You need the big reason.
Frugal Living with a Purpose
For me, we live on a tight budget to pay down debt so that one day, we won’t have to watch every, single penny so closely. For you, it might be that you live frugally so that you can afford to send your kids to private school. You need to have a purpose for your frugal living. That purpose is what is going to keep you going when you want to give up. If you don’t know or don’t remember why you are living on a tight budget, take some time today to think of it.
It really might just be that you don’t have enough income coming in and you have no choice. That’s okay. You can use this time to build your frugal skills so that when you do have more income, you can continue to perfect your frugal living skills. That is when you can have a “know your why” session and make a plan for your future money.
Know your why to keep from burning out on making your goals Click To TweetInstead of letting yourself get burned out with whatever it is you are doing, not just frugal living, take a moment to regroup and take some time to find your purpose. Know your why. Know the reason why you are doing whatever it is you are doing. If you need to, make something you can hang on the wall or the fridge to remind you of your “why” on a daily basis. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to stay on track when you remember to keep your eyes on the big goal.
I really enjoyed this article. I really find it amazing that I can always find money to save when there is a concrete reason why. Right now I have 2 major goals for saving money. I am looking forward to retirement in a couple of years. I want to have all my debt paid by this time. I do not want to start retirement with debt hanging over my head. Secondly, my granddaughter’s baton group is scheduled to perform at Walt Disney World in November. Of course, that is a huge expense. Not only am isa ing for spending. Onshore, but I am also paying for the trip with installments, but I am hoping to fly. These goals have helped me stay ver focused and on track.
Isn’t it amazing how concrete reason really do help? That trip sounds fun!
good post. I live on a frugal budget mostly to have peace of mind. Having savings gives me a buffer so I don’t have to worry about the “what-ifs” so much….I’m also just not into expensive things…
