Well, Irene hit here yesterday after she turned from a hurricane to a tropical storm. My area of the state usually doesn’t get hurricanes since we are no where near the coast. Well, this one was different. We got hit pretty hard. The highest count of those without power ended up over 210,000 throughout the state. For a state with our population, that is a very high number. I lost power here but only for about 5 hours. We live on a main circuit with a nursing home down the road. So we tend to get back on pretty quickly.
Watching the news, the damage is crazy. We’re used to high winds…in the winter when the ground is frozen. The rain softened the ground and trees uprooted all over the place.
We had no damage here…to the yard or the house. I’m very glad the big pine trees out front stayed.
To me, yes, there was damage.
The power went out at 4:00pm. After gathering the last of my candles and lanterns, I took the portable DVD player out to the van to charge it. On the way back in, a gust of wind made me slip. I ended up slamming my left hand right into the building. I think it is only sprained as I can’t feel any bones out of place and can still bend it.
I couldn’t get to the hospital yesterday anyway so ended up asking some nurse friends what the ER would do if I showed up. Come to find out, it was everything I was already doing.
Here is what a hand is suppose to look like.
This is what my hand looks like.
That “shadow” on my knuckle is actually a bruise. Hard to see on a picture. Very glad I wasn’t wearing my rings.
Even my palm is swollen and bruised.
I think the worse part about the whole this is that the DVD player refused to charge. Got injured for nothing. 🙁
So apparently Matt and I are made for each other. He falls on a chainsaw, I fall into a building. And today, the cat fell off the railing, bounced of the steps, and landed in the entryway. I guess we are just a clumsy family.
