I think these days a lot of people hear "coupon" and they think extreme couponing. They think getting $400 worth of food and household items for less than $10. Well that is all well and good, for most of us, that isn't reality. Most of us see a savings with using coupons but nothing that extreme. An average week of couponing saves me $10-15. A good week saves me $20-50. That may not be much but at $10 a week that's $40 a month or $520 a year. At $20 a week that's $80 a month or $1,040 a year. … [Read more...]
Making Financial Sacrifices
Sometimes you have to have little splurges to keep you from making big ones. Sometimes it is more frugal to spend money up front on a more expensive item. But much of the time, making financial sacrifices is where you save the most. That is how you get the most out of your frugal lifestyle. Those sacrifices can come in all sizes and shapes. One of my small sacrifices comes in bath and body items. I used to always use the hand soap from Bath and Body Works. I always thought I was doing … [Read more...]
Burning Out on Frugal Living…Revisited
(I originally posted this the summer of 2013. It is still true for me today, a year and a half later.) I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I get tired of having to pinch pennies and think frugally on every, little thing. Frugal living can be exhausting. I would love to just say, “Sure, honey, you can buy a cup of coffee every day” or to finally purchase the stuff that has been in my cart at TheContainerStore.com for 2-3 years. Or stop sinking money into the Focus when it … [Read more...]
Ways I Saved- January
1. I made cookies using a mix I received as part of a Yankee Swap at a Christmas party last month. Less work and cheaper than making them fully myself. :) 2. I used a Buy One, Get One Free coupon to buy some disposable razors. I haven't paid full price for razors in 7 years. 3. I used a free medium coffee coupon from my Dunkin Donuts Perks account. I love that program! I put money on my DD gift card and each time I use the card, I earn 5 points per dollar spent. After 200 points, you get a … [Read more...]
Saving Money at the Grocery Store
I originally posted this June 2013. Not that long ago. However, with everything going up in price, I thought we could all use the reminder. I know that sometimes I get lazy with my grocery shopping/money saving efforts so the refreshers are always nice. I think we are all looking for that one big money saving idea that is just easy and saves a ton of money. It doesn't exist. Sad, I know. I wish there was one magic answer too. Instead, saving money, especially on those everyday items, … [Read more...]
When It’s More Frugal to Spend Money
If you are anything like me, you probably spend a lot of your time trying to save money. You buy used items, you buy the cheaper version of most everything (including food), or you just use something well past when it should have been tossed. But is that always the best choice? Is it always the most frugal choice? I've purchased jeans at Walmart for $18. I've also purchased a better brand at Kohl's, on sale for $25, usually $40. The $18 jeans lasted me about a year, year and a half. The … [Read more...]
