Saturday was Abby’s 2nd birthday party. It was a Curious George themed party as the girl loooooves her some George. It’s an obsession really. But as most moms and some dads know, character themed birthday parties are not cheap. To make it cheaper and keep it a frugal birthday party, I did a combination of purchased and DIY’d items.
Decorations
Her birthday balloon was from Amazon. I couldn’t find a Curious George balloon locally and it was less than $3 online. I then paid $0.79 at the grocery store to get it filled with helium. When the balloon finally died, it was taped up to her bedroom wall for decoration.
I also made a tissue paper pom-pom garland with a package of primary sheet tissue paper for $0.97. I already had the string and fishing line on hand. The glass door makes it hard to take pictures but take my word for it. It looked pretty cool.
Food
I made vanilla and chocolate cupcakes from scratch and frosted them with yellow buttercream frosting, also homemade. For favors, I made up baggies of plain M&M’s and chocolate twos using this tutorial. They were in a basket with a sign with another picture of George that said, “Thanks for joining us today! Please take some chocolate for on your way!” Also, forgot the picture. We had a semi-disaster right before the party so I forgot some things.
Lesson learned
The semi-disaster: I tried to create a cupcake tower out of cardboard, tin foil, tape, and soup cans. It would have worked had I used stronger cardboard. The tower had to be taken apart as I tried to put the cupcakes on. It was such a balancing act it would not have worked. Cupcakes would have been falling and making a huge mess. The end result was using the bottom layer of cardboard, a Pampered Chef trifle bowl ( the stand part isn’t attached to the bowl), and a plastic tray. But here is how the original idea looked. Isn’t it pretty? 🙂
