Words have power. They can help, they can hurt, the can entertain, they can destroy. Online, in print, in speech. Words have so much power.
Words tend to affect me greatly. I feel like people mean what they say. Do you have any idea how many blog posts never get published? I realize that words have power and I don’t want to offend or hurt someone because of my strong opinions. So I don’t publish it, even if I think it is fine.
I have been, presently and in the past, been so, so hurt, offended, and angry by words said on Facebook. What is it about Facebook that seems to bring out the “I can say what I want and it doesn’t matter” side of people?
I have no problem with talking about your opinion on Facebook. That it fine with me. I do it some myself. I do have a problem when people don’t think about the repercussions of their action of posting something without thinking.
Words….Have….Power.
What you say today, can affect someone tomorrow.
So before you publish that blog post or make that Facebook status or do whatever it is they do on Twitter, remember some things.
-How it this worded? Am I getting my point across without being a jerk?
-Is this really necessary to share with the world?
-Are your words going to help or entertain or are they going to hurt and offend?
Sometimes we can hurt and offend without even meaning to. This is just part of living in a world with so many different points of view. But by trying not to word things in offensive ways and really thinking before you speak/type, you can cut down on the number of people you alienate.
If you remember nothing else this week, remember this and put it into action.
