The snow is finally almost gone. The ground is starting the thaw. All this has me thinking one thing. Garden! We have a small to medium sized vegetable garden. We grow green beans, peas, tomatoes, one pepper plant, a few beets for Matt, and we try cucumbers. Last year our cucumbers never made it. We have a different plan for them this year so hopefully they will do well. I also have a flower bed behind the house. Last year my daisies didn't come up and my phlox all died. The little … [Read more...]
Maple Syrup and How We Make It
It's that time of year again. It's maple syrup season! I think most people realize that maple syrup comes from maple trees but that is all they really know. There is so much more to it than that. There is quite a bit of science to it. First- Maple syrup comes from maple sap that is boiled down to remove most of the water but leaving the sugar. Second- It take approximately 40 gallons of sap to make just 1 gallon of syrup. Wow! Huge ratio for sure. Third- The weather has to be just … [Read more...]
Grace: An Update
When I decided that I was being led to choose "Grace" as my word of the year, I had no idea how much it would get tested in the first few months of 2014. One of the best ways I have found to save money and avoid aggravation has been to go shopping earlier in the morning. I try to get to the store no later than … [Read more...]
Two (Simple) Exciting Things

It was scary as you have to heat it to such a high temperature then stir it constantly until all the moisture suddenly leaves and it becomes sugar. Simple process but any time you heat sugar to a high temperature, it is scary with the possibility of getting burned, burning the pan, etc. I used my Kitchen … [Read more...]
Frugal Birthday Party- Curious George Themed
Saturday was Abby's 2nd birthday party. It was a Curious George themed party as the girl loooooves her some George. It's an obsession really. But as most moms and some dads know, character themed birthday parties are not cheap. To make it cheaper and keep it a frugal birthday party, I did a combination of purchased and DIY'd items. Decorations Her birthday balloon was from Amazon. I couldn't find a Curious George balloon locally and it was less than $3 online. I then paid $0.79 at the … [Read more...]
